temperature was 27°C. On International Streptomyces Project (ISP) media 1, 2, 3, and 5, the strain produced yellow diffusible pigment and the reverse side color of the colonies was yellow. Melanin production was not observed on either tyrosine or peptone iron agar. The following tests were positive: starch hydrolysis; degradation of allantoin, lecithin, pectin, xanthine, and hypoxanthine; resistance to rifampicin (50//g/ml); tolerance to sodium azide (0.01 % w/v); utilization of D-glucose, D-raffinose, a-lactose, L-arabinose, D-galactose, L-valine, salicin, a-( + )-melibiose, D-fructose, D-mannitol, ( + )-mannose, L-sorbose, D-ribose, (+)-rhamnose, (+)maltose, sucrose, (+)-xylose, rayo-inositol, and

Purification and characterization of 6-chlorohydroxyquinol 1,2-dioxygenase from Streptomyces rochei 303: comparison with an analogous enzyme from Azotobacter sp. strain GP1.

The enzyme which cleaves the benzene ring of 6-chlorohydroxyquinol was purified to apparent homogeneity from an extract of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol-grown cells of Streptomyces rochei 303. Like the analogous enzyme from Azotobacter sp. strain GP1, it exhibited a highly restricted substrate specificity and was able to cleave only 6-chlorohydroxyquinol and hydroxyquinol and not catechol, chlorinated ...

A Novel Actinomycete sp. Isolated from Egyptian Soil has $-Lactamase Inhibitor Activity and Belongs to the Streptomyces rochei Phylogenetic Cluster

Many pathogenic bacteria secrete $-lactamase enzymes as a mechanism of defence against $-lactam antibiotics. A new Streptomyces sp., NRC-77, was isolated from an Egyptian soil sample. The NRC-77 strain has biochemical, chemotaxonomic, morphological and physiological properties consistent with classification in the genus Streptomyces, with the nearest species being Streptomyces rochei. Furthermo...

Oxetin, a new antimetabolite from an actinomycete. Fermentation, isolation, structure and biological activity.

A new amino acid-antimetabolite, oxetin, was isolated from a fermentation broth of a Streptomyces sp. OM-2317, a soil isolate. The chemical structure was elucidated as (2R,3S)-3-amino-2-oxetane carboxylic acid by analysis of the spectral data and by X-ray diffraction methods. The antibiotic is the first natural product possessing an oxetane ring. Certain microorganisms were inhibited by oxetin ...

Taxonomy and Polyphasic Characterization of Alkaline Amylase Producing Marine Actinomycete Streptomyces rochei BTSS 1001

Actinomycetes isolated from marine sediments along the southeast coast of Bay of Bengal were investigated for amylolytic activity. Marine actinomycete BTSS 1001 producing an alkaline amylase was identified from marine sediment of Diviseema coast, Bay of Bengal. The isolate produced alkaline amylase with maximum amylolytic activity at pH 9.5 at 50°C. The organism produced white to pale grey subs...

Twenty-seven endophytic actinomycete strains were isolated from five spontaneous plants well adapted to the poor sandy soil and arid climatic conditions of the Algerian Sahara. Morphological and chemotaxonomical analysis indicated that twenty-two isolates belonged to the Streptomyces genus and the remaining five were nonStreptomyces. All endophytic strains were screened for their ability to pro...
